The University of Rijeka was founded in 1973, but its history dates back to the 17th century when the Rijeka Jesuit gymnasium was created with equal status to the academies in major cities of the Austrian Empire.

As a young institution, the University of Rijeka has been quick to adapt to the major trends in higher education like internationalisation and the focus on the student experience. It is the among the first universities in Croatia to teach health sciences in a foreign language, launching a Medicine programme in English in 2017. The university follows an integrated approach to education, which places equal emphasis on students’ technical knowledge, employability skills and ethical standards. To enhance the student experience, the university also runs a student counselling centre on campus.

Besides the education quality, the University of Rijeka’s students also enjoy a pleasant study environment. The Mediterranean and Central European vibe of the city of Rijeka makes it a great place to live as a student. With a number of active student societies, there are sports and social activities on campus all year round. Especially, the University Sports Union of Rijeka and the Student Sports Society OSS regularly participate in tournaments and competitions.

The University of Rijeka aims to be in the top 500 European universities.

At the moment, it is possible to study Medicine and Business entirely in English at the University of Rijeka. The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1955, and it has an excellent reputation as one of Croatia's leading medical schools. The Faculty boasts three educational centres and four clinics, allowing their medical students to gain more clinical hours than most of their peers. The Faculty of Economics and Business, on the other hand, has its own career centre and library to tailor services to business students. The impressive facilities at both faculties, as well as their global network, play an important role in their success of recruiting international students.
